"Get Congress back. Everything is at stake… we can do it. Time is up!"

Said Jane Fonda, quoted in "Jane Fonda, Gloria Allred, Tessa Thompson Slam Trump at Sundance Women’s Rally" (Variety).

It seems like every day I see headlines about various people slamming Trump. Has anyone ever been so slammed? And to so little effect? And yet, Fonda and her ilk assert we can do it. Did you see the "We Can Do It" sign in the photo at the link?

Not terribly well drawn. She almost looks like she's hugging him, when clearly what is intended is a murderous chokehold. Through Google image search, I found this better-drawn version of the idea:

ADDED: The artist on the well-drawn version of the idea appears to be Kevin Karstens.

AND: Look at this other poster that came up on my "we can do it trump" search: A "We Can Do It"-type woman carving up Trump's head on a plate.

I think what is going on now is that while each "side" are flinging accusations at the other, it is just cover for each side's internal confusion and intramural search for the guilty who have gotten their respective parties into this mess.
There does not seem to be any leaders with any ideas for how to get out of it.

What effect would you like to see? His numbers are in the tank and Republicans are bailing out of reelection contests at a record rate. In a democracy this is the best that can be achieved by the opposition.

The numbers have stayed basically the same, despite all the attacks. I agree that the numbers are low, but the attacks are ineffective.

OK, so Sarah Palin puts crosshairs on districts in CO (among other places) and that is "eliminationist rhetoric." But a woman literally slicing up Trump's severed head on a plate is just different, because shut up. Got it.

People, maybe we ought to rethink the whole "eliminationist rhetoric" thing. Because, you know, I get the feeling you're doing it wrong.

Gotta love the tattoo in the first drawing. I know it’s supposed to be the “female” symbol, but because the circle and lines aren’t connected, it looks like an upside down cross, a satanist symbol. To me, the tattoo says give Christians the finger. It’s a plausible message from that crew.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Donald Trump use the “shutdown” to make some moves that suit his purposes. If Obama’s people could close national parks, Trump could rope off the FBI.

Each side in Congress is going to have to figure out who within their own caucus is most to blame for this before they even think about negotiating with the other, never mind the White House.
I think Trump is in the catbird seat - again.

I wonder if Trump doesn't understand Women better than most women do. He has been well acquainted with some fine specimens. The current Feminist understanding of Women is a bit fraudulent, a vision of Women as the Movement wishes them to be, rather than as they actually are.

If certain women want men to understand why they are so upset by Donald Trump, they first must understand why Jane Fonda upsets so many men and has for so many years. I think those women are clueless.

Apparently, she has/had serious "daddy" issues, with her father having been cold, aloof, and never complimenting her or her work (which is why she did Golden Pond with him at the end of his life). The result, apparently, was a head full of spaghetti, when it came to sex. She, being the daughter of a legendary actor, wouldn't have needed to sleep her way into acting gigs. But last jelly would have been willing, if her husband at the time, thought it a good idea, or just wanted to watch. Which is why her being involved in this is so absurd.

How can someone who touts himself as a reasonable man spout such jejune rhetoric?

I don't know about the others, but Jeff Flake retired (chickened out, more accurately) because he feared being kicked out by Republican voters in the coming primary.

Quaestor predicts Flake's seat will go to a Trump supporter.

@ARM: Have you seen any reliable predictions of how many “resigned” seats will automatically transfer to the Pro-Hillary camp? Dems are vulnerable too.

Beloved Commenter AReasonableMan said...

I think the House is now in the toss-up category. While the Senate remains lean Republican. It is too early for analysis of single seats because it will depend on who runs but generally losing an incumbent is good for the other party. Again, the opposition is doing its job reasonably effectively at the moment. Not perfectly, but less stupidly than I had anticipated.

Agree that Trumps numbers have not changed with over 90% negative coverage of him.

On being ineffective, disagree:

1. Trumps numbers would be much higher if not for the attacks
2. There is a backlash due to the negative coverage as shown in the media’s credibility / being seen as non partisan / truthful
3. The left keeps on ramping up the anti Trump stuff. Russian investigation, sexist, racist, anti Semitic, dementia, etc. as these attacks are proven false / ineffective , it provides some immunity to Trump.

This is just a venue for the ongoing propaganda campaign.
These things are effective.
What counts is persistence and volume, and that side of politics certainly has the power (funding, control of careers/institutions) to an overwhelming degree, which are what it needs to conduct such a campaign.

The pro-Trump side, or rather the anti-system side, are in the position of insurrectionists fighting as guerillas. They are very much the underdogs, the oppressed social classes in this conflict, in spite of the disingenuous rhetoric of the master-class - Jane Fonda is a case in point.

buwaya said...

Its difficult to drive Trumps numbers down much lower, there is a core to his support which his opponents will find irreconcilable, because of course this is an existential struggle; it is perfectly well understood that the anti-Trump side wishes to exterminate that 43-ish%, with a Tutsi-Hutu level of enmity.

But the campaign, as Ray says, serves well enough by keeping things as they are.

What the Jane Fonda's of the world cannot tolerate is that PDT doesn't take them seriously and doesn't care what they think. Their self-esteem is based on the idea that they are very serious and we all should care. But they're not, and we don't.

The reason that the President's party normally does poorly in the first mid-term election is that in the Presidential election year the President's coat tails helped some weak candidates of his party, and absent the coat tails, some of those candidates will lose. I don't know how many such coat tails candidates Trump helped, and I haven't seen any discussion of that. In some mid-term elections, like 1994, the non-Presidential party succeeded in making the Congressional elections a referendum on the President's performance. Obviously, the Democrats hope that 2018 will be like 1994, except in reverse. Maybe. But usually Congressional races are won and lost locally. We'll see.

Buwaya,

We both live in the Bay Area.
Last year, the Pussyhat Parade meant I was the ONLY female customer at the Farmers' Market. This year, my liberal-but-hinged Pilates coach bitched that it cut into her Saturday morning class attendance, but it looks like the numbers weren't anywhere near as big as last year.

What these ladies are going to do is make the blue areas actively bluer, which won't mean diddlysquat for disputed elections and nothing for the Electoral College.

So I'm not quite as pessimistic as you, since I think their tactics aren't on target.

Also, I've been watching the Long March through the institutions for 40 years, with DrZ providing dire Cassandra commentary to any who would listen. 2016 was the first time I dared hope we might be able to fight back, as the Army of Davids (which turned out to be an Army of Trolls) got organized behind Trump.

So far, we've done better than I'd hoped. And Brexit, Poland and the Visegrad 4 means there's hope for Europe. Canada, France and Germany, on the other hand....
