"Brazilian police have arrested 10 people suspected of planning terrorist acts during the Olympics...."

"The group was inspired by ISIS and only had contact with the group via the Internet..."
Earlier this week, a jihadi channel on the messaging app Telegram called for attacks against the Games and detailed targets and methods, according to the SITE Intelligence Group.

SITE said a message was posted to "Inspire the Believers!" saying, "Lone wolf from anywhere in the world can move to Brazil now."

Someone should make extra sure that the fasteners on the uneven parallel bars haven't been loosened.

Welcome to "Hybrid War," people. This isn't Westphalian-system war we're waging. It's more complex and, perforce, dirtier. Everyone needs to understand that and adapt accordingly.

For a JV team, they seem to have a lot of fans.

One wonders if crushing them two years ago would have given them the cache now to attract adherents around the world.

Wow, seems like to only logical way to combat this strategy is through a careful vetting process on those who attempt to enter our country. Am I wrong?

As far as I can tell, only one side is adapting. Iran, ISIS and Russia clearly are inside the Obama/Rhodes/Jarrett OODA loop

Isn't it winter in Brazil right now? Close to the equator, sure, but a high of 62F today. Why are the summer Olympics happening there, now?

Eric the Fruit Bat said...

Brazil being in the Southern Hemisphere must mean that the track runners have to go in the other direction.

62 sounds like good weather for running. The avg high for July is 79f, the avg low is 64f

Interestingly, Brazil was the destination of by far the most Africans captured and sold into, slavery; and was the last government to outlaw slave trade, except for the darkness of Muslim areas where it never stopped.

But at least The Russians Are Not Coming.

Only in your unstated assumption that everyone agrees that this strategy should be combatted.

So the games will be protected by a government which (1) literally can't clean it's shit and (2) couldn't finish the stadiums by the start of the World Cup. I sure hope Brazilian security forces are under the direct authority of someone else. I was going to say the IOC but they're a corrupt pack of bumbling numbnuts also.

I think Jason Day has the right plan.

There was a much larger number of plotters but many were stricken with the Zika virus and put out of action.......Many countries are such shitholes that even terrorists don't want to emigrate there. Syria is the exception that proves the rule.

Sarah Gazarek sings duet with Kurt Elling on "Você Já Foi à Bahia." Pretty damn good, IMHO. She's not Brazilian, though, as if that matters.

Been listening to Eliane Elias, lately. Brazilian. Small combo arrangements very much more to my preference than the original Bossa Nova stuff. Syrupy strings surgically removed. No Stan Getz-style honking, either. Tom Jobim could play piano but he was smart never to fly too close to the sun. Her backup people sound so polished you need to wear shades when listening. I wish her voice were a bit more clear, there's some hoarseness, but maybe it's just that I've been listening to her later stuff and she's no spring chicken.

Speaking of chickens, I'm guessing that the Brazilian steakhouses near the Olympic events won't be inexpensive. No bargains to be had. I know someone who went to Belgium intending to make up the cost of air fare in the savings to obtained from drinking massive quantities of low-priced beer. Wrong! She came back aghast at how freaking expensive it was. Taxes, apparently.

Anyone else put off by the CNN International hyper-animated, hand waving, bouncing correspondents of late? Christiane Amampour did the same kind of ninja crap when she was interviewing MP Daniel Hannan about Brexit - I thought she was going to hit him with her flailing arms. A couple of others do it, too. Must be some kind of new CNN directive. It's incredibly distracting and annoying, but, then, it is CNN.

Ironic the LPGA players are for the most part all showing up...

Every Olympics has their own stream of panic leading up to them - money, corruption, finishing the venues, third world problems etc yet come games time they all mange to go off without to much drama. I think this time will be different.

Mrs. Wilbur just returned from a visit to Brazil. In the southern end, they had frost on the windows and were experiencing winter similar to our southern states.

The southern populace are mostly thrilled Dilma has been impeached but they're hungering for Lula, Dilma and their cronies to be locked up for life. No one's too concerned with the Olympics, and really don't care if they come off or not. They have more important things to worry about after the disaster these leftists have left them.

Wilbur will watch the golf and soccer events in the Olympics, assuming I'm home when they're on. The rest of it ... who cares? I could never understand the jingoism wherein people believe the US athletes are somehow competing for the good ol' USA, and that how they finish should somehow matter.

Agree. Totally different command-and-control structure. Incentives need to be understood and applied against all key nodes in the structure. Both the guy updating the ISIS website to exhort visitors to go on jihad; and the visitors who decide to do just that. What incentives are effective? What goals --incapacitating or deterrent or other-- can be achieved? All bets, all taboos, are off...

google: KGB Lebanon kidnapping

a group of gunmen seized four Soviet diplomats and embassy workers (Arkady Katkov, Valery Myrikov, Oleg Spirin, and Nikolai Svirsky) in Beirut. During the kidnapping right outside the embassy, Katkov was wounded in the leg....

According to Benny Morris, who was Jerusalem Post's diplomatic correspondent at that time and later became famous as a brilliant historian, in tandem with the threats, the Soviets took sharper action:

[T]he KGB kidnapped a man they knew to be a close relative of a prominent Hezbollah leader. They then castrated him and sent the severed organs to the Hezbollah official, before dispatching the unfortunate kinsman with a bullet in the brain.

In addition to presenting him with this grisly proof of their seriousness, the KGB operatives also advised the Hezbollah leader that they knew the indentities of other close relatives of his, and that he could expect more such packages if the three Soviet diplomats were not freed immediately.

Soon thereafter, the surviving three hostages were dropped off by the Soviet embassy "from a late-model BMW that couldn't drive away fast enough" and never again was a Soviet (diplomat or otherwise) kidnapped in Lebanon. As Benny Morris put it: "This is the way the Soviets operate. They do things - they don't talk. And this is the language the Hezbollah understand." Not only Hezbollah, but ISIS and every other Muslim terror group.

CONSPIRACY THEORIES
=====================
Yes, conspiracies do exists, we are surrounded by conspiracies on greater and lesser scale... But, know that these conspiracies cannot affect the outcome destined by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala ... and also not everything is conspiracy.

If Allah SWT has destined for you victory, these conspiracies cannot harm you.Infact, Allah SWT can use these conspiracies as a mean for your victory...

If Allah SWT has destined loss for you, no one can benefit you...
People back then conspired against Muhammad SalAllaho 'Alaihi WaSallam but Allah SWT protected him ...

People now are conspiring against message of Muhammad PBUH and Allah SWT will protect the carriers of message of prophet Muhammad PBUH.

And the disbelievers planned, but Allah planned. And Allah is the best of planners. [ 3 : 54 ]

And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners. [ 8 : 30 ]

Tickets! Get chur Olympic tickets right here. Two for a dollar, a dozen for a fiver. All events! Great seats available now!

Seems like the Olympics always are held in places that plan on making a killing and/or where they will develop great new infrastructure on the spectator/media dime. Seems like this never pans out.

Brazil will anchor the tail on that Oh Shit! bell curve.

There was of course LA in 1984: Los Angeles strictly controlled expenses by using existing facilities except a swim stadium and a velodrome that were paid for by corporate sponsors. The Olympic Committee led by Peter Ueberroth used some of the profits to endow the LA84 Foundation to promote youth sports in Southern California, educate coaches and maintain a sports library. The 1984 Summer Olympics are often considered the most financially successful modern Olympics

and Salt Lake in 2002: The Games were also financially successful raising more money with fewer sponsors than any prior Olympic Games, which left SLOC with a surplus of $40 million.

Drill SGT: I was generally familiar with the Russian response to the kidnapping of their people. They have about the strongest "currency" in this marketplace. I was also generally familiar with the good economic and other results at the Olympics in LA 1984 and SLC 2002. Ueberroth led the effort in 1984. And a guy named Mitt Romney had something to do with SLC 2002. Funny how that works, but only with incorruptible business types...

I've always liked the Olympic games and, while I may pull for US athletes to do well, my main interest is seeing the world's best athletes.

Doug said...

I predict that the Rio Olympics will bankrupt NBC. The Peacock Network is going to have to spend billions to protect its on-air talent, crews, the athletes and its sponsors from attacks they never dreamt when the deal was done back in the distant past.

Haven't watched the Olympics since the 80s, when the networks decide athletics wasn't enough, that viewers needed to see and hear stories and special moments from the lives of the participants. When the Olympic committee decided $$$ to allow professional athletes to compete, and the US decided it was "game over" for the rest of the world in basketball, I signed off, and won't come back. Bravo to the pro golfers who said "no thanks".

mockturtle said...

Doug: that viewers needed to see and hear stories and special moments from the lives of the participants.

Oh, yes! The 'up close and personal' bullshit that ruined the coverage. We don't want to know how the athletes 'feel' or how they live. We want to see them perform. Period.

JAORE said...

"Oh, yes! The 'up close and personal' bullshit that ruined the coverage. We don't want to know how the athletes 'feel' or how they live. We want to see them perform."

I recall one Olympics where, IIRC, some Russian gymnast has his fiance die in a car wreck, They noted it over and over and over. Sadly for the networks the guy finished way out of the medal race. I thought how many great performances were not shown for the tear-jerk effort.

The Olympics morphed from a must-see to an occasional channel surfing pause.

jaed said...

There was always some of the up-close-and-personal stuff, but ABC Sports used to keep it within bounds. There would be a 90-second hazy clip here and there, but the focus was on the sports. The move to make this stuff the focus (supposedly to "attract women") killed the Olympics for me. (I once heard a statement by somebody at NBC describing their target demographic: women in their 30s, who don't want televised sports. At the time, I fell precisely into that demographic. And I hate this stuff. My mother hates it.

That being said, the "Team America" bullshit is fully as destructive. I had gotten less and less interested as there were fewer sports and more soap opera, and also as there was more and more emphasis on "team sports" and less on individual athletic events, and more coverage of the you-can-see-this-any-weekend events and less of the unusual sports. (Which were much of why I used to watch - you could see unusual stuff, get background info from well-informed commenters, etc.)

But I stopped watching completely after one Olympics where they announced that an American woman, who had not been expected to place, had come in second in her event. They didn't show the race, but they would now take us to the medal ceremony...

...where they cut in after the bronze medalist had been given her medal, showed the American silver medalist being given hers...

...and then cut out to another event, where an American was expected to "medal". And didn't show the gold medalist being given her medal. I don't think they even bothered to mention the winner's name.

mockturtle said...

Though the Canadians are more chauvinistic than we are, their coverage is better. It's always a little sad to see their hopes dashed so often.
